Connecting the Mismatched: How Double Studded Adapters Solve Interface Challenges

In heavy industrial operations, systems rarely stay static. Whether you are integrating new high-pressure machinery into an existing line or connecting components from different manufacturers, you will eventually face the “interface challenge”: two pieces of equipment that simply weren’t designed to bolt together.

When sizes or pressure ratings don’t match, you need a bridge that is as strong as the systems it connects. This is where the  Double Studded Adapter Flange (DSAF) becomes the most valuable component in your manifold.

At CRC Wellhead Supply, we have spent over four decades perfecting the art of Canadian Quality Customized High-Performance machining. Our DSAs are engineered to turn complex connection problems into seamless, high-performance realities.

What is a Double Studded Adapter (DSA)?

A Double Studded Adapter is a solid, flat piece of steel with a specific bore through the center. Unlike a standard flange that uses through-holes for bolts, a DSA features tapped blind holes on both faces. This allows you to install studs on one side to match one flange pattern and different studs on the opposite side to match another.

By using studs instead of long bolts, the DSA acts as a high-strength “converter” for your piping system.

How DSAs Solve Critical Interface Challenges

1. The Pressure Rating Crossover

In many industrial upgrades, you may need to connect a lower-pressure system (e.g., 5,000 PSI) to a higher-pressure rated component (e.g., 10,000 PSI).

  • The Challenge: Standard flanges of different pressure ratings have different bolt circles and hole sizes.

  • The DSA Solution: A custom-machined DSA allows you to transition between these pressure ratings safely and securely without needing to replace entire sections of your infrastructure.

2. Flange Size Transitions

When a 4-inch line needs to feed into a 7-inch intake, a traditional reducer spool might be too long or bulky.

  • The Challenge: Traditional spools take up significant horizontal or vertical space, which can be a dealbreaker in skid-mounted equipment or tight facilities.

  • The DSA Solution: Because it is essentially a “plate,” the DSA provides the size transition with almost zero added length to the system.

3. Space-Efficient System Integration

For modern industrial manifolds, footprint is everything.

  • The Challenge: Adapter spools (the “long” version of an adapter) add weight and length, increasing the stress on piping supports and taking up valuable real estate.

  • The DSA Solution: The DSA is the ultimate space-saver. It provides a robust, API 6A-compliant connection in the most compact form factor possible.

The CRC Advantage: Precision in Every Thread

Because a DSA relies on tapped blind holes, the margin for error is zero. If the threading is shallow or the alignment is off by a fraction of a millimeter, the seal will fail under pressure.

  • Engineering Expertise: Our in-house engineers and machinists work together to ensure that every DSA we manufacture—whether it’s a few inches wide or a massive 3-foot, 3,000 lb component—is perfectly balanced and precisely tapped.

  • Dual Machining Capability: We utilize precision CNC machining for the exacting tolerances required for seal surfaces and bolt circles, while our manual machining shop allows for the rapid customization and one-off repairs that keep North American industries moving.

  • Certified for Safety: Every DSA produced by CRC Wellhead Supply is backed by our API Q1 and 6A certifications. We ensure material traceability and high-performance durability for the toughest environments.
